Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in U.S. and Instituto Superior Técnico of Portugal Sign Collaboration Agreement

Two Institutes Will Work Together on Research, Student Exchange, Joint Master’s and Doctoral Theses, Faculty/Staff Exchange, and Other Efforts

 


Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Instituto Superior Técnico of Portugal today announced an agreement to collaborate on a number of fronts, ranging from research to student and faculty/staff exchange.

“This agreement is the result of an effective and very fruitful cooperation that has been developed in the last 10 years between the Institute of Biotechnology and Bioengineering (IBB) at IST and the Center of Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer, which has involved joint Ph.D. and post-doctoral researchers and projects,” said Joaquim M.S. Cabral, director of IBB and professor of biological engineering at IST. “Recently, an international Ph.D. program on ‘Bioengineering: Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine,’ coordinated by IST, was approved by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The participation of Rensselaer in this program brings their expertise and strength in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and nanobiotechnology to this effort as well as its international dimension, leading to a unique platform to foster new knowledge and scientific advances in regenerative medicine.” For further details click on

Inauguration of the Clean Room facilities at the SCBL


7th December 2012

The inauguration of the Clean Room facilities of the Stem Cell Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine laboratory was announced at Instituto Superior Técnico, Taguspark campus in a ceremony that brought together students, teachers, researchers and entrepreneurs.

A reporter SIC-Visão aired on the 4th of October 2012 highlighted a project carried out by Professor Joaquim Cabral, Prof. Claudia L. da Silva and PhD students Francisco dos Santos and Pedro Andrade from SCBL-IBB-IST in collaboration with IPO-Lisboa with which was possible to save the life of a child by using mesenchymal stem cells.

The interview of Professor Joaquim M. Sampaio Cabral focused on the opening of the new SCBL-RM facilities at TagusPark. These new laboratories correspond to "a total investment of over half a million euros", and a team of about 40 researchers is currently developing their work on the "area of bioengineering and regenerative medicine".

Falar Global - National Television Program on Clinical Applications of Mesenchymal Stem Cells


On the News, 30th January 2010

The TV program "Falar Global" aired on the 30th of January 2010 focused on the clinical application of mesenchymal stem cells. The use of these cells to reverse Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD) in a clinical setting was highlighted. Professor Joaquim M.S. Cabral and the researcher Francisco dos Santos, from the Stem Cell Bioengineering Lab at IBB-IST, together with Professor Manuel Abecasis, from IPO-Lisboa, were interviewed and described the major goals and achievements of the project. This pioneer work is a good example of using bioengineering as tool for medicine.

Nós por cá - National Television Program on Stem Cell Research


On the News, 17th April 2009

The TV program "Nós por cá" aired on the 17th of April 2009 focused stem cell research in Portugal. The young Portuguese investigator Cláudia Lobato da Silva, from Stem Cell Bioengineering Lab at IBB-IST, was interviewed and showed a good example of bringing medicine and scientific research closer by using engineering as tool for medicine. In this particular the research aims to use stem cells to reverse Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD) in a clinical setting.

Professor Joaquim M. Sampaio Cabral wins "Prémio Científico UTL/Santander Totta 2008" in Biological Engineering, Biochemistry and Biotecnology. The award is the recognition of the scientific work and career and is sponsored by Santander Totta bank. The award ceremony will take place on the 4th of December 2008 at IST.


First Annual FLAD Educational Innovation Awards 2008

Cláudia Lobato da Silva (assistant professor at IST) was distinguished with the First Annual FLAD Educational Innovation Award. This award from the Luso-American Foundation based in Lisbon recognizes the extraordinary efforts of Portuguese faculty members in the MIT-Portugal Program to create educational programs at the highest standards of excellence.

National Television Program on Leukemia


In the news, 16th July 2008

Professor Joaquim Cabral participated on a national television program on leukemia. This program focused on the disease, its impact on society and patitens and on the latest therapies available. Within this last focus Porfessor Cabral elaborated on the participation of the Stem Cell Bioengineering Lab in the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Project on clinical application of this cells in leukemia patients.

National Television Program on Innovation - Geração HighTech


In the news, September 2008

Cable TV channel AXN program Geração HighTech. The program focused on the impact of this MIT|Portugal in the academia, both faculty and students, and more generally in the global impact for Portugal. Professor Paulo Ferrão (MIT|Portugal program coordinator) Professor Joaquim Cabral (MIT|Portugal program Bioengineering Systems co-coordinator) and the student David Malta were interviewed.




4th International Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies (SPCE-TC)

Ciência 2008


Events, 4th July 2008

Professor Joaquim Calbral chaired the session Células Estaminais e Medicina Regenerativa of the meeting Encontro Ciência em Portugal – Ciência 2008 that took place at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian from 2 to 4 July. 

The objective of the meeting was to increase the public awareness of portuguese scientific activities and to stimulate discussions among researchers. During three days, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the main research lines of the different Associate Laboratories in Portugal and to discuss the current scientific and technological activities.

The Associate Laboratory Institute for Biotechnology and Bioenginnering was presented on Friday (session: Biologia, Biotecnologia e Bioquímica).

Professor Cláudia Lobato da Silva presented the topic Cellular therapy with mesenchymal stem cells (session: Células Estaminais e Medicina Regenerativa).

Graduate students from the lab enroled in the MIT|Portugal program participated on the Bio-Teams session.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Project


Events, 11th January 2008

The Stem Cell Bioengineering Laboratory started a pioneer project in Europe aiming for the optimization of Bone Marrow transplantation, in particular on minimizing the effects of Graft versus Host disease. This project will be sponsored by Grupo José de Mello Saúde and Associação Portuguesa Contra a Leucemia (APCL) and will be developed in collaboration with Professor Manuel Abecasis, IPO lisboa and Professor Hélder Trindade, Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Sul.
