Research Activities
My research concerned the development an alternative way of purifying the lectin Canavalia brasiliensis taken from the seeds of the leguminous plant Canavalia Brasiliensis (Dioclenae class) using aqueous two phase system. This lectin was used as a model for the purification of other lectins that may potentially be important in the area of biotechnology. Lectins are glycoproteins that are commonly found within nature and that contain at least one non-catalytic domain, which is able to bind reversibly and specifically to carbohydrates. Lectins have found application in several research areas, including molecular structures, genetics, plant physiology and investigation of protein-protein and protein-carbohydrate interaction.
