Research Activities
The potential application of stem cells (both embryonic and adult) in
regenerative medicine requires the production of large quantities of
these cells. To fulfil these requirements there is a need to develop
large-scale bioreaction systems, including the design and optimization
of bioreactors for the ex-vivo expansion and controlled differentiation
of stem cells. My research focuses on the design, operation and
characterization of a stirred suspension bioreactor for the expansion
and neural differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells on
microcarriers that can be scaled-up. The integration of expansion and
neural differentiation in a single step is also aimed at reducing
processing costs and time.
